Travel Traditions

We're taking our first family vacation this summer! In many ways I am beyond excited because traveling is one of the things the husband and I both want to do with our children...show them the world as much and as often as we're able. However, I won't even begin to go into detail of how nervous I am about having to pack for, fly with and road trip with a baby...which is a lengthy, whole other story. Most of it is probably unwarranted anyhow. My parents did it with my brother and I though! There's a picture of me, probably the same age as Noah, at a camp in Colorado that my childhood church would visit every year.

But aside from the nitty gritty, I also want to make sure that I don't forget that we wanted to start some sort of vacation traditions. Whether it's in the form of a collection of key chains or magnets or postcards, or maybe a specific family photo, we need to decide on this trip what it's going to be! At the same time, I don't want to become hoarders for the sake of tradition.

I polled my FB friends and have some good ideas for now while some are already nixed. For instance, I'm TERRIBLE at scrapbooking. So that idea is out the door. But I love the idea of postcards...just have to figure out what to do with them.

Maybe the idea will come to fruition while we're actually on the trip. Kind of like once we see it, we'll know it. Or perhaps it doesn't need to be anything tangible. Perhaps we make a tradition of visiting a museum in every place or touring a factory for which that area is known. Sounds kind of boring now that I think of it.
Last November, before Noah came along, the husband and I visited Lambeau Field in Green Bay and attended the Packers game all because of the history of the field (the husband's idea). We spent the weekend in Milwaukee before driving up and I really enjoyed getting to enjoy more than just the football game. We talked about following the Dallas Cowboys to see them play in every NFL stadium in the country as a way to see cities we've never been to before, so maybe that's one tradition we'll still incorporate now with our children. I did mention in our Life Lists. God forbid, those end up being the only trips we take however.
